Obituary for Samarendra "Sam" Chakrabarti

Samarendra "Sam" Chakrabarti
Sam Chakrabarti
1939-2018

We announce with deepest sorrow that beloved husband and father Sam Chakrabarti passed away on Tuesday June 12, 2018, at the age of 78. He bravely battled 15 years of Parkinson’s with great strength and dignity and lived independently at home with his wife of 51 years, Marianne, who dutifully cared for him until his last two months. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Foothills Hospital and Southwood Hospice for the care they provided for Sam at the end of his life.

Sam will be greatly missed by Marianne; his twin daughters Anita (Ed) Stevens and Sonia (Adrian) Perna; and grandchildren, Tayla, Sammy, Abigail Stevens, and Nadia and Natasha Perna, all of Calgary. He is also survived by one sister and nieces and nephews in India as well as the Chakrabarti family in New Jersey, U.S.

Born in West Bengal, Sam met Marianne (nee Fluckiger) in Switzerland, and they immigrated to Montreal in 1966 where he completed a Masters in Engineering at McGill before moving to Calgary in 1977. He worked as an engineer in Calgary and all around the world, retiring from Esso as a Project Manager and member of APEGA (The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).

Sam loved music, badminton and chess. He will be remembered fondly for his brilliant mind and fine wit.

Memorial Service will be on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Villa at 178 Strathaven Circle S.W. , Calgary. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations to the Calgary Down Syndrome Association.
