Obituary

May Carpenter

Mom , Grama, Great Grama and Loving Friend passed away on March 9, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta and is with her family now.
Her loving spirit was the last to leave as she “Loved Life to the end”.
May was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on April 16, 1931 and Mom was the youngest of 8 Clark children.

After leaving the farm, Mom lived in Calgary and raised 4 girls. She was also blessed with 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

After the full-time mothering and working as a supervisor at the Calgary General Hospital, it was time for travel and friends and sleepovers at the grand kids’ houses. Having a full and loving relationship with all of her family and friends was important to her, and she succeeded.

Her life and legacy is Love, it lives on in every heart she touched.

Memorial service will be at Choice Memorial Cremation and Funeral Services
4715 13 St. NE Calgary on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 2:00 pm.

If you can write down your special stories and send them to Bev.mike.blades@me.com so we can share in remembering your thoughts of Mom that would be appreciated. There will also be an opportunity to personally share memories at the service.

I really think my fondest memories of May When she was living in the cabins we would have tea parties sometimes I go to do her hair and we can have tea and just talk for hours .She loved her family so much , she loved to share her family with me when she got new photos I would get the story to go with. But I think biggest memory for me is when she invited me to her birthday and I said oh darling you just need your close friends and your family and she said to me You’re not just my hairdresser you are my dearest friends and I really would like you to be there to make my day . I will miss her so much I love you my dear friend Rest In Peace

May Carpenter was my favorite Aunt. The best times we had as children were had while visiting her and her daughters in Calgary. She was always kind and generous with her time. Yet most of all she was a great support for my mother Leona when she often needed it. My Aunt's maturity was often beyond her years. Now just realizing her strength; even in her youth, at just what I calculate to be sixteen years of age. This courageous young lady was working to help support her father, my mother and her new born baby, me. This was 1949 to maybe 1950. Not of being well developed mind at time I can only estimate the years. My mother would have been 22 years and in those days having a child out of wedlock was no easy task. Getting work, support for your child while away or even family help was nearly impossible. I loved my Grandpaw, but he was not one to find work either. Yet my wonderful young vibrant teenage Aunt supported all four of us. I mean financially, emotionally, physically and many other ways I'm sure. Yes even Grandpaw must of been a lot for a young girl to handle back then. She was the youngest and undoubtedly the bravest in family. If anyone represented the strength of family, then and eversince it was "Aunt May" . Anything I am today is in a large part do to you "Aunt May". May you finally rest in peace "Aunt May" and may your spirit rise with the Angels Your most greatful nephew Bill (William Nelson)

May I feel honoured to have the opportunity to write a few words about May but I’m wondering how can I possibly share this only in a few words because May was an exceptional woman in all aspects of her life and a few words seem impossible. My gift of friendship with May came by way of my mom, Eva (Koselak). May was mom’s Supervisor at the hospital. Through mom I learned that May was strong, yet gentle and fair. She treated her staff with dignity and so began a friendship of many decades well into their retirement. You the family know May as a mom, grandmother & great grandma so I’d like to show her to you through the eyes of a friend. I haven’t met all of you, her family but I feel like I know you because family was sacred to May and her eyes would sparkle as she proudly spoke of you. Devoted, loyal, trusting and loving. She reminded me of a gentle shepherd. Always caring to the needs of her friends. She loved to celebrate special occasions and was usually the organizer. She was also there in hard times offering support and wisdom and encouragement. To my mom Eva, May was the fixer. Mom trusted May’s advice over mine but I was OK with that because I too admired May’s wisdom but most of all I trusted her because her intention was always about making things better. In all of this I can’t forget that May’s life was one of enormous challenges and struggle. She fought the hard times with dignity and courage. That is probably why she had so much empathy for her friends. Through it all she chose to find the bright and positive in everything. Her enthusiasm was infectious. Generous to a fault never forgetting a Birthday or special occasion. Of the many gifts May gave mom, one was a pink knitted shawl. Mom loved that shawl and on cold days she would wrap herself in it and a hundred times she would say to me “thank God for May, she is always looking after me”. I still have that shawl and will keep it as memory of love and friendship. My daughter Shanon and I were blessed by mom’s friendship with May. We quickly learned to love her as she embraced us too. While feeling the sorrow of May’s passing, we also feel gratitude for the gift of May’s life. Where there was darkness she always lit the way with her positive attitude and loving heart. Thank You May for the gift of your life which will have an everlasting impact on our journey. Chris & Shanon Fisher

Bev, Michael, Jay, Ryan, and Melissa ... my friends, from the day we all met the strength of the love in your family has shone brightly through thick and thin. The way you all live your lives with passion and devotion to family is a beautiful reflection of May's spirit and love. That will live on for eternity within all of you. Both Adam and I send our love out to you all, our hearts are with you in this time of sorrow. This summer in the Kootenays when we get together, we'll eat some berries and peaches and enjoy a celebration of May's spirit once again!
