Doreen Ann Stainger (nee Goski)
March 4th, 1947 - Sunday, February 24th, 2019
Doreen Ann Stainger passed away at Dulcina Hospice in Calgary on February 24, 2019. Born in Regina, SK, on March 4, 1947, Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Wesley Stainger, her mother, Marian Stewart and her father, Philip Goski, several dear aunties and uncles and cousins and most recently by her close cousin, Beverley Ogden of Alameda, SK. Doreen leaves to mourn her Auntie Jean Treble of Regina, SK; Uncle Rudy (Theresa) Chowaniec of Edmonton, AB; and Uncle Clarence Leas of Fillmore, SK; as well as her beloved first cousins from her mother’s and father’s sides, their spouses and children.
Doreen spent her young childhood years with her parents in Fillmore, SK, her teenaged years in Regina, and then Calgary from the mid-sixties until her passing. Doreen married Wes in 1973. They enjoyed thirty-five years together and especially enjoyed socializing and camping with friends. In 2005, Doreen and Wes moved to an assisted care home under the direction of Waverley House. Her wonderful caregivers, many over the years, became like family to Doreen, as did two special friends and long-time house-mates, Dennis and Sidney. Doreen had a willingness and desire to help out anyone who needed it – and she could always tell who needed it. She brightened everyone’s days with her expressions of gratitude and by the interest she took in their lives. She also knew how to enjoy herself and could be counted on to come up with a reason to celebrate with a party and cake - birthdays, Halloween, Valentines, you name it! She very much looked forward to Stampede each year, excited to dawn her Stampede gear, attend a breakfast, visit the grounds and take in the parade or a concert.
In the past several years, Doreen was able to travel with her Alberta cousins, Loral Stewart and Audrey Treble-Audette, on excursions to the mountains (even last summer), a few visits to the west coast to visit family, travelling “home” to Saskatchewan and weekend get-aways at hotels. It was always a pleasure for Audrey and Loral to be in her company and she will be dearly missed by them.
In her quiet way, Doreen exuded joy and connection – always with an “I love you” and a hug. One of the highlights of Doreen’s life was her 70th birthday celebration in Regina in 2017. She was absolutely thrilled by the many relatives and friends who came to help her celebrate. Doreen spoke for months following about every detail of her party, mentioning each person who attended – but also never leaving out loved ones who weren’t able to be there. She felt truly honoured by everyone’s presence and by the effort made to come, especially her almost 100 year old Auntie Rosamond, all the way from White Rock, BC. For the last four months of Doreen’s life, her new home became Dulcina Hospice. She continually expressed how much she loved it there. Her exceptional hospice team expanded her family and her big heart even more. Doreen was inspiring to all who came to know her, living each day, in her humble way, with grace, joy, laughter, love and acceptance, teaching us right to the end what is truly important in life. We think Doreen would say she had a very good life.
For Doreen’s Calgary friends, a casual reception will be held at Choice Memorial (105 - 4715 13 Street NE, Calgary).on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 6 PM. Service and interment will follow in Fillmore sometime in the late spring, for her Saskatchewan family and friends.
