In 1997 Teresa started her career in funeral service in Brandon, Manitoba at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, where she received her licence as a Funeral Director and Embalmer.  In 2002, Teresa moved to Calgary and worked for Leyden's Funeral Home for three years, then at Commemorative Services (Evan J. Strong Funeral Services) for eight years.  Over this time period, she had the privilege of meeting and working hand in hand with hundreds of families, and helping them plan meaningful ceremonies to both mourn and celebrate the life of a loved one.  Over her many years in funeral service, Teresa has had the opportunity to work with many Priests and Pastors in numerous churches throughout the city, becoming well aware of the different cultures, beliefs and customs that make Calgary so unique. Teresa opened Choice Memorial in September of 2014 in order to give Calgary and area families a lower cost - higher service option for funeral services.   Teresa is passionate about the profession, and loves serving families, allowing them to have dignified and respectful services without having to re-mortgage the house.  Her guiding principle and the foundation for serving families is simple - funerals are a place to pay your respects, not your life savings.

Apart from funeral service what does she love?  The Calgary Flames, fly fishing, running, and  most of all - being a mom to Lakeisha and Jayda - two out of this world, awesome daughters, and being a Nanna to Beau - the most handsome little grandson in the world!

Cheryl Walker, Funeral Director / Embalmer

Cheryl Walker has been a Funeral Director and Embalmer for over 16 years, having worked with Teresa at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services for 4 of those years.  Upon hearing that Cheryl was taking a leave to look after her father, Teresa, knowing what a huge asset Cheryl was to funeral service, immediately contacted Cheryl to convince her to remain in the profession.  It was a wonderful day when Cheryl joined Choice Memorial in July of 2017.  Families love Cheryl for her empathetic understanding and her warm, caring nature.  With her many years of experience in funeral service, Cheryl is a wealth of knowledge and is able to help families plan their perfect farewell.

Cheryl is married with three fabulous adult children, is a lover of big dogs and little kittens, and loves anything water-sport related.  She is a connoisseur of red wine and uses her vacation days to travel the world.

Kelsey Sclanders, Funeral Director / Embalmer

Kelsey joined Choice Memorial in June of 2017.  Having completed Mount Royal’s Embalming program in the spring of 2016, Kelsey received her Embalmer License by the end of the same year.  Kelsey knew she wanted to be an Embalmer from the young age of 12.  Her love of science, especially biology and chemistry, combined with her love of makeup and cosmetics, led Kelsey to pursue her dream.  That’s why she started university in the fall, immediately after graduating from the Foundations for the Future Charter Academy.  Kelsey’s compassionate and caring nature, along with her love for helping others, has contributed to her success as a young person in the funeral profession.  Kelsey received her Funeral Director Licence in 2019.  In her free time, Kelsey enjoys art, relaxing, and spending time wither family of two cats and her fiancé.

Jaime Krisa, Funeral Director / Embalmer

Jaime was born and raised in Calgary.  She began her career in funeral service in 1995 and worked at several funeral homes in Calgary before moving to British Columbia where she embalmed for four different locations, and was in charge of the preparation room for two locations.  After working in BC for four years, Jaime desperately missed Alberta and decided to come home.

In 2003, Jaime completed her Funeral Directing and Embalming Certificate Program at Mount Royal University.  In that same year, she received her dual licences and moved to Japan where there was a full time Embalmer position at a high volume embalming centre.  Jaime began teaching Japanese embalming students and 3 years into her career in Japan, she met and married a United States Navy Officer.  Jaime became pregnant with her first child and made the very hard decision to leave her beloved career, return to Canada and become a stay at home mother.

Six years later, Jaime decided to return to school and became a Medical Lab Professional.  She worked in the lab for 6 years, and then became a Licensed Primary Care Paramedic.  Even though many years had passed, Jaime still longed to work in funeral service.  In the spring of 2018, Jaime joined the Choice Memorial family.  She has since reinstated her Embalming Licence and is in the process of reinstating her Funeral Director Licence.

Jaime has two children that occupy the majority of her time.  She is an avid crocheter and Harley Davidson rider.

Kent Oszust, Funeral Director / Embalmer

Growing up in the community of Huntington Hills, Calgary native Kent Oszust's career in funeral service incidentally began in Vancouver; after hitchhiking a ride with his guitar at the age 19 while in search of a troubadour lifestyle as an original folksinger. While living in Vancouver under his musical alias Jack Harlan (www.jackharlan.ca) and releasing two independent albums to make ends meet, a long time prairie family connection led him to being offered a part-time position at Vancouver’s east side location Hamilton-Harron Funeral Home. There Kent started out firstly as courier and then moved on to decedent transfer care. Finding himself becoming more and more part of the funeral home team and culture at Hamiltons, he accepted a full-time apprenticeship position. Mentored by Manager Jim Houseman and the long standing team, Kent graduated from The Western School of Funeral Service of BC in 1999. Hamiltons remained home for 13 years, with on and off musical tours of the USA and Canada; releasing another album under the Nettwerk Records lable (Sarah Mcgaluglin). He then met his future wife who was originally from Montreal and after a few years together in Vancouver they decided to plan an adventure to be closer to her family, relocating in 2007 to the rich fruit-belt of Niagara, in southern Ontario. Kent remained involved in funeral service in Ontario as a licensed funeral director and embalmer; serving in St. Catharines, Niagara falls and Hamilton. During this time, Kent and his wife started an online medicinal herb and organic superfood food store, becoming heavily involved in the healing food community of Niagara, Buffalo and Toronto where they hosted many events and festivals. In 2015 they decided to close their business and in 2017 Kent’s mother’s struggle with Dementia became too much. Kent and his wife relocated to Calgary in early 2018 to help with her care needs. Upon returning, he took some time to reacquaint himself with living in his home town again; part of that was learning about the various funeral homes which he had never been a part of. Upon learning about Teresa and her vision for Choice Memorial, it sounded like the right place to reach out and connect to. Kent's first meeting with Choice was with owner Teresa and her long- time comrade Cheryl. He loved their enthusiastic down to earth positive energy, offering straight forward service to the families Choice serves. Although not ready for full time, Kent joined in the summer of 2018 as a part-time help where was needed, attaining his Alberta licensing requirements and joining Choice as a full time funeral director and embalmer March of this year. He looks forward to the future with Choice and being of service to other staff and families in any way he can. Outside of Choice, Kent and his wife enjoy living downtown with their cat Little Joe, Thai food, Sunday morning breakfasts, river walks and with Calgary being the sunniest place in Canada and having one of largest city park system, they enjoy the sunny bright days exploring trails outdoors.

Darcy Deering, Funeral Director

Darcy had been a Funeral Director and Embalmer serving families for over 15 years before retiring from funeral service in 2005.  Over his career, he has served thousands of families with Funeral and Preneed Services. Darcy and Teresa worked together at Leyden's Funeral Home from 2002- 2005.  When Teresa's partner Justin died in December of 2016, Darcy attended his Celebration of Life Service.  In true character, Darcy asked "is there anything I can do to help?' and of course knowing what an excellent Funeral Director Darcy was, the answer immediately was "Yes, reinstate your Funeral Director Licence and come and help serve our families".

Darcy is a giant teddy-bear and is able to make families feel instantly safe and relaxed.  With his many years of experience, he is able to expertly help families personalize their service, creating the perfect farewell.  By nature and by experience, Darcy will do everything possible to make sure that he serves every family beyond expectation. Darcy is one of those blessings that comes after a loss, and Choice Memorial is fortunate to have him here, doing what he does best - serving families from his heart.

Bailey Tollan, Apprentice Funeral Director / Apprentice Embalmer

Bailey joined Choice Memorial as an apprentice in December of 2018, being hired on the spot for her wonderful personality.  She is an "about-to-be" graduate of the Mount Royal Funeral Services Program with her dual license in Funeral Directing and Embalming.

Coming from the retail industry, Bailey spent a few years searching for a career that truly displayed her compassionate heart and intrinsic need to care for others, eventually deciding that she would fit into the Funeral Industry perfectly.  Bailey is on a fast track to completing her program and attaining both of her licences before the end of 2019, while also attending the University of Calgary learning to speak Mandarin.

Aside from serving families, Bailey has love and passion for traveling.  After spending the summer in Thailand, Bailey would love to some day get a feel for different types of funeral services around the world.  She also enjoys snowboarding, drawing and cuddling with her two pups, Ammi and Karly.

Lisa Demers, Office Administrator / Graphics

Lisa has worked behind the scenes at Choice Memorial since February 2015 as our bookkeeper.  Although she has a great affinity for working with numbers and organizing paper, she has found a much deeper appreciation in making personal connections with our families since officially joining the staff in an administrative position last fall.

Lisa and her husband Bill have two teenage sons, Ryan and Colin, who are the light of their lives.  They have made a home for themselves in Haysboro, and have deep roots in the community and neighbourhood family they have built there.  The Demers are passionate campers and enjoy many hours together in the outdoors.  When not pitching tents or hauling their trailer to the mountains, building camp fires, and playing cards, their favourite place to be is snorkeling with the turtles in Maui.

Karen McNair, Office Administrator / Graphics

Karen entered the funeral industry in September 2013, after more than 20 years in office administration and collections. Her time in administration makes her efficient and organized, traits that are welcome in our industry.  The funeral industry awakened a desire to help families, be compassionate and have that personal interaction.

We are so blessed that Karen joined the Choice Memorial family in October 2018. She looks after administrative tasks and graphics for families who have stationery designed for them at Choice. She works closely with our families in order to ensure that they are receiving something that represents their loved one accurately.

Karen is married and has four children and six stepchildren. Karen and her husband enjoy spending time with their kids and the 24 grandbabies that they currently love on. When she has a minute of free time, Karen is also an avid scrapbooker and reader.

Jack Ashby, Planning Consultant / Pastoral Services

Jack brings 6 plus years experience in the funeral industry and years of experience in working with families and seniors. His work experience is diversified in many areas including marketing, networking and connecting people with services that best meet their needs.

Jack is a volunteer chaplain with the Calgary Police Service.

He and his wife Gerri have been married for 25 plus years, have six grown children and twelve grandchildren.  In their spare time, Jack and Gerri help others plan and celebrate life's big events - from birthdays, to weddings, to baptisms to wedding vow renewals.  Their website can be found at www.weddingsbyjackandgerri.com.

Beau Martone, Funeral Director in Training

Beau is not currently a full-time staff member and has zero experience in funeral service, however he is arguably the cutest little man this world has ever seen.  Having no luck convincing my daughters Lakeisha and Jayda to follow in their mama's footsteps - I will start working on my little grandson to join this cherished profession one day.
