Obituary for Mui-Fan Lee

In loving memory of our mom, Mui-Fan Lee

Our mom, Mui-Fan Lee, was born in Swatow, China, on September 17, 1937. She was the second of eight children. After World War II, she moved to Hong Kong to study Accounting while working at her father’s factory. Mom and dad were married in 1963. They have two sons, Edward and Andrew. Edward married Grace in 1990. Andrew married Susan in 2002.

In the late 70’s, she and dad opened an optical shop, fulfilled one of his career dreams. The family immigrated to Canada in 1989, and settled in Toronto. Our parents owned and operated a couple of coffee and donut franchises in both North York and Oshawa, Ontario.

In the early 2000’s, mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She bravely fought off the cancer. Characteristic to her “tough lady” personality, she did not even take the post-surgery / post-chemo pain medications after her treatments. During this time, mom and dad decided to retire from the franchise business. They both came to faith in Jesus Christ around the same time and were baptized at North York Chinese Baptist Church.

In the fall of 2008, Andrew moved to Calgary for work. Coincidentally, in January 2009, Edward moved to Portland, Maine for work. Mom and dad joined Andrew and Susan in Calgary in mid-2009 and have lived there since.

Mom’s favourite activities included reading, working on jigsaw puzzles, and playing with the dogs at home. She loved chocolate! Her favourites were Ferrero Roche and After Eight. She also loved her drinks hot. Whether tea, soup, or red bean dessert, all had to be scalding hot for her to truly enjoy. Mom has been a hard-working person all her life! She would wake up early, and never procrastinated. She was always generous with her time and resources, ensuring her family, siblings, relatives and friends were well looked after. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially in recent years when mom and dad would travel to Hong Kong over the winter months. In the summer and fall of this year, she had the opportunity to travel to Toronto, Alaska, and Hong Kong, and had many wonderful visits with family and friends.

In April 2018, mom was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. Her condition deteriorated quickly in early November and she was hospitalised. She was cared for by the excellent staff at Rockyview General Hospital. Mom was very content and was at ease in her final days. She looked forward to being in the presence of our Heaven Father!

On Monday, December 3, 2018, mom passed peacefully into God’s presence. She is survived by her husband, Yiu Sum Tam, her sons, Edward and Andrew, and daughters-in-law, Grace and Susan, and her brothers and sisters, Miu-Jun, Jackie, Edith, William, Catherine, and Audrey, and their families. A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at South Gate Alliance Church, 1436 James Mckevitt Rd SW, Calgary, AB.

Mom will be missed by her family and friends. We look forward to seeing her again in heaven one day!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rockyview General Hospital /Calgary Health Trust.
