Schmidt, Frances Gail
November 26, 1937-November 5, 2018

F. Gail Schmidt (nee Herrod) passed away on November 5, 2018, just three weeks shy of her 81st birthday. Gail was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and servant of God. She was dedicated, committed and generous to family, friends and strangers alike; she loved, prayed and gave to everyone unconditionally. She was a friend, an artist, caregiver, confidante, cheerleader, soulmate, prayer partner, champion, angel, gourmand, traveler, and warrior. Always well-dressed, stylish and elegant, Gail loved going out for coffee or dinner—equally as comfortable alone as in the company of friends or family. Born in Lloydminster, Gail lived in Montreal, QB, St. John, NB, Winnipeg, MB, Edmonton and Calgary and had a long and successful career as a legal secretary at Encor Inc., Dome Petroleum, and Talisman Energy, working well into her 70's and earning the respect of her many colleagues.

Gail shared her passion for God’s creation through pictures taken on her walks around the Glenmore Reservoir, often using them as inspiration for her artwork. Gail was also a talented cook and baker and always sent family and friends home with her famous buns and shortbread cookies. Her family was her most treasured gift—she spoiled us all, but her faith guided her in everything she did and blessed her with an extended Christian family with whom we shared her and who also loved her dearly. With a quirky sense of humour and a love for all things odd and cute, she brought joy to each of us. Gail lived a life of integrity, truly embodying the spirit of Christ. Even when she was the most unwell, Gail continued to sacrifice and give unreservedly to all who needed her, choosing to witness to and pray for everyone she met through her cancer journey.

Gail is survived by her husband Bob, to whom she was married for 58 years; her children Elizabeth (Darren) Finkbiner, Jim (Jennifer) Schmidt, Joanne (Daren) Hinton; her grandchildren Jana (David), Jordan and Jacob, and granddog, Himeiji who will miss her annual Christmas day walks. She also leaves behind twin sister, Anne, older sister, Sylvia, and younger brother, Wayne.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jennifer Grossman and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the entire team in Unit 93 at the Rockyview Hospital who cared for Gail and all of us during an extremely difficult time.

December 1st marked the start of Christmas decorating for Gail—her most cherished holiday, no one celebrated Christmas like Gail, and we invite everyone to celebrate her life with us. Funeral Service will be held December 1, 2018 at Oak Park Church of Christ (11263 Oakfield Dr SW, Calgary) at 11 am. Donations in memory of Gail may be made to Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, World Vision, or a charity of your choice.
