Madelon D. Andrews
October 2nd, 1926 - October 15th, 2018

Madelon was born October 2nd, 1926, to Alfred and Sarah Rideout in Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland. She had three brothers and several half-brothers and half-sisters. She had a very happy childhood and regaled everyone with beautiful stories of her and her brothers going on the horse and sleigh to gather wood for the winter and picking blueberries on the hill behind her home in the summer, like scenes from a Rockwell painting. She loved skating and watching her brothers play hockey. This is how she met her husband, Gerald “Markie” Andrews. They were married in 1946. They had four children – three girls and one boy (the apple of her eye). Madelon was widowed in 1964.

She moved with her family to Toronto in 1967 and from there to Calgary in 1974. Madelon was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known as ‘Nanny’ by all her family and friends. Her great passion was looking after her family, baking, and music. Nanny was constantly singing or humming with a big smile on her face. She enjoyed nothing better than the family sing-alongs held on special occasions and holidays.

She was diagnosed with dementia in 2003 and for the last 8 years lived at McKenzie Towne Long Term Care where she was revered by residents and staff. Her smile was infectious, and she thought everyone who came through the door was there to visit her.

Nanny died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Oct 15th. She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by her family – daughters Paula Cooke, Christine Bradshaw and Tina Quinn (Jim) and son Mark; grandchildren Paul Cooke (Donna), Christopher Cooke (Laura), Andrew Bradshaw (Oonagh), Bradley Friesz (Sheena) and Jennifer Friesz (Justin); and great grandchildren Taylor, Madison and Cailyn Cooke and Alex and Mark Bradshaw.

The family would like to thank Dr Mankaeva and the staff of Rapid Access at South Health Campus in Calgary as well as the staff of McKenzie Long Term Care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
