Elsie Marion Bachinski (Gross)
April 28, 1930 - October 12, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of our dear mom, gramma, and great- gramma at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Elsie was born in Elbow, Saskatchewan to John and Katharina Gross. As a girl she and her family moved to Hilton, Manitoba, where her parents farmed. She moved to Brandon, Manitoba as a young woman and married the love of her life, John (Johnny) Bachinski in 1951. Together they raised their children Don and Bev. Elsie worked for many years in the fabric department at Eaton’s, and later as the mail clerk at the Provincial building in Brandon. Following the passing of Johnny she maintained her beautiful yard in Brandon before moving to her “ granny suite” in Bev’s back yard in Okotoks, Alberta in 2002. There she continued her love of gardening, camping, and travelling. Mom’s love for her family was immense and she was closely involved in everyone’s lives.

Mom enjoyed some wonderful vacations throughout her life. She and Dad travelled extensively throughout Canada and loved to camp during the summer. They also travelled to Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. After dad’s passing in 1988, mom continued to travel and returned to Spain, New Zealand and Hawaii; and also enjoyed a trip to China with Bev and a sailing excursion in the Caribbean with Don. She loved going on cruises and, despite health challenges in the past few years, had continued to go on cruises.

Mom is survived by her son Don, daughter-in-law Pam, and their children Melissa Whitwell, Morgan (Sylvie) Whitwell, and Ellen (Hamish ) Stuart as well as her daughter Bev and her children Matthew Malazdrewicz, Rebecca (Norm) Malazdrewicz, Josh (Leah) Malazdrewicz, Katrina Malazdrewicz, and step-daughter Shayna (Mark) Nackoney-Skauge. She also has great grand-children Cirdan Gagne; Brodie, Amelie, Anna, and Jack Whitwell; Brooklyn Unger; Mikayla and Emilyn Malazdrewicz, and Hayley Skauge. Bev’s children and grand-children have lovingly called her “big gramma” since Brooklyn (Rebecca’s daughter) was unable to pronounce “great gramma” as a toddler! Numerous nieces and nephews also survive and loved mom dearly; and special friend Gail Holden was like a second daughter to her. Mom has a sister Louise Dunn in Brantford, Ontario; and brother Walter Gross in Brandon. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Katharina Gross, and brothers Albert, Erwin and Eric.

Mom was famous in the family for her delicious hamburgers cooked on her special griddle - kids and grand kids would always come for supper if Gramma was making her burgers! And ice cream was a necessity! No matter where we were - at home, camping, or travelling in a foreign country, ice cream was required!

Grammas sense of humour and feistiness were present right up to the end. We all treasure the memories of her cute giggle and grin, and the group hugs that she needed whenever we left her house. Mom loved her dogs and all of the “puppies” in the extended family. All of the four legged family members knew that Gramma always had puppy biscuits waiting for them when they visited her, and Katrina’s kitty, Little Boo would run outside for gramma cuddles whenever mom was enjoying time in her rocking chair on the back deck.

Our hearts are breaking but we all take comfort in knowing that mom is now at peace and with dad and all of the family critters who passed before her. Our precious memories and pictures soothe our hearts and bring us smiles every day.

Mom did not want a service - she wants a “party” with family and close friends. We will honour her wish at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

If friends desire the family would appreciate donations in mom’s name to the Brandon Humane Society in Brandon, MB., or to Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation in High River, AB.

Rest In Peace, mom. We love you forever and will do our best to honour your wisdom and your gentle heart.
