Obituary for Albert Abel

Albert Abel
October 20, 1932 - Gnadenfeld, Ukraine (Russia)
December 10, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

We sadly announce the passing of Albert at the age of 86 on December 10, 2018 at the Salvation Army Agapé Hospice in Calgary. We are grateful that he is no longer in pain and is finally at peace.

Albert deeply treasured family above all else. Albert will forever be loved and remembered by his loving wife of 60 years Mathilda (his beloved Tiserle); children Shirley (Cal), John, and Stephen (Seana); and all his special grandchildren Kayla, Dillon, Joshua, Tanner, Samuel, Colton and Meghan. He will fondly be remembered by sisters-in-law Penny, Christel, Hilda, and Karyn; brothers-in-law Bob (Helen) and Frank; special family member Edda; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Albert was predeceased by his parents George and Emma; siblings Robert, Ida, Minnie, George, Ewald, Helmut; and brothers-in-law Edgar Fried and Edward Jobs.

Albert and his brother George were avid canoe racers and won many trophies for several years. One of Albert’s greatest accomplishments was as a member of team Alberta in the historic 5,283 km Voyageur canoe race from Rocky Mountain House to Montreal and Expo 67 to mark Canada’s Centennial, where team Alberta placed third among ten provincial and territorial teams. Later when he was no longer canoeing, Albert and Mathilda spent time hiking in their beloved mountains in Alberta, BC and the United States.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Chan and a special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sharma, the nurses, nursing attendants and volunteers at Agapé Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

To respect Albert’s wishes no funeral service will be held. However, a time to remember with extended family and friends will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Albert’s memory to Agapé Hospice (http://www.agapehospice.ca/pdfs_backout/DonationForm.pdf).

Good-bye my Bubele, until we are together again in our beloved mountains and can be as free as the wind.
