Obituary for Kass Freedom

Kass Freedom (AKA Dale “Kass” Kassian)

Kass passed away at his home in Calgary on July 5th, as the result of complications from Diabetes. He was 63 years old.

He was pre-deceased by his Parents Lucie and Roy Kassian of Edmonton/Devon/Kelowna; He is survived by his Brother and Sister-in-Law Mark and Suzanne Kassian of Stony Plain, and his Daughters Angela Malone of Edmonton and Alicia Plummer of St. Albert.

Kass was a Renaissance Man:

World Traveller (specifically Europe and the Americas); Loved driving his Jeep and his MG; He was an “Adventurer” who took many of us along for the ride.

Wilderness Adventure; Hiker/Kayaker/Canoer/Cyclist; Rock Climbing; Black Diamond Skier (Down Hill Riders; French Alps; Swiss Alps); Off Roading; Scuba (certified); Racquet Sports; Martial Arts (his weapon of choice was “guile”……followed closely by brass knuckles and nunchucks…or whatever was handy)

Professional Life:

Fitness Trainer (certified); Poet (published); Writer/Novelist (un-published); Song Writer/Musician, (Composer of Music and Lyrics for Guitar and Harmonica); An Advocate for Workers Rights.

His musical taste was eclectic. Once a collector of Vinyl he transitioned to CDs and amassed a collection of over 2000.

Kass performed a lot of volunteer work: Taught a class on poetry writing; performed Worker Advocacy; Concert and Event Security; Aiding those in the criminal justice system transition back into society; sandbagging during the floods….whatever he was called upon to do, Kass showed up!

Kass felt compelled to Stand Up for the little guy, especially women; And would simply not tolerate bullies.

Kass was a complex personality…….more than words could describe. If you want to get a feel for who he was, watch the movie “As Good as it Gets” and listen to the song “Don Quixote” by Gordon Lightfoot (or read the story of Don Quixote written by Miguel de Cervantes) . Kass was Melvin Udal and Don Quixote all rolled into one. “Through the woodland through the valley comes a horseman wild and free, tilting at the windmills passing, who can this brave young horseman be” so long Kass…we miss you already.

This was written by Kass’s brother Mark who played the role of Sancho Panza to Kass’s Don Quixote.
