With family by her side, Joan Penman (nee Bain) passed away on Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018 at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her husband Stewart Penman; brothers Charlie Bain and Donald Bain; parents John “Jack” and Betsy Bain; and her great-granddaughter Lily.

Joan was a blood donation champion and was proud of her award for 491 Red Cross blood donations. She would easily have surpassed 500, however was no longer permitted due to age restrictions.

Joan made deep roots in her home and community and preferred her homelife to travel. She cherished her family and friends and always had a pan of rice krispie squares ready for when anyone visited. When she was able to, Joan liked to make desserts for all occasions. A favourite pastime was reading cookbooks and collecting recipes to try. Ginger and licorice were favourite taste bud treats.

With a quick wit and wonderful sense of humour Joan met, kept and forged many friendships in her lifetime through the YMCA swimming and Haysboro Community Association Tai-Chi fitness programs especially. She enjoyed weekly coffee dates at Phil’s, London Fog Café, Co-op Café, and in days gone by at $1.49 day at Woodwards with many of these friends. Early morning coffees with the regulars at McDonald’s and A&W were also part of her happy social routine.

Two of Joan’s favourite sayings were “this too shall pass” and “life goes on”. When times in our lives are difficult, may we remember these words of wisdom and think of her guidance.

Joan had a great fondness for animals, owls in particular. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you please consider a donation in memory of Joan to the SPCA (https://www.calgaryhumane.ca/donate/) or to a children’s charity of your choice.
