Obituary for Jack Thomson Halls

Jack Thomson Halls
Jack Thompson Halls
May 18, 1940 – June 15, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce that Jack Thompson Halls, loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully in his home in Calgary, Alberta on June 15th, 2018 at the age of 78.

Jack is predeceased by this parents Alec and Isabel Halls of Elora, Ontario.

He is survived by his wife Diane, his son Scott (Cindy) Halls and daughter Sherri (Scott) Andrews. Jack adored his grandchildren, Kathleen, Gregory, and Lauren of British Columbia and Tyson and Kyle of Calgary. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Karen Halls-Hollis and her two children Christy Fillier and Jordan Hollis. He will also be forever remembered by Diane’s brother Allan (Heather) Radbourne, and their two sons Michael and Christopher as well as Diane’s mother Annie Radbourne of Oshawa, Ontario.

Jack was born in Elora, Ontario on May 18, 1940. He lived in Elora with his parents and sister Karen until he graduated from Fergus High School. Following High School, Jack began working in the financial world with BMO for the next 10 years. During Jacks time at BMO, he joined the company curling team and was very proud to tell anyone that his team had a perfect 8-ender, quite an accomplishment for a corporate team whose members all had a day job - financial. It was during this time that he met Diane. Their courtship would prove to be a lifetime romance and they were married April 5, 1969. They had two children together Scott {1972) and Sherri (1973) and remained married until he passed away shortly after they celebrated 49 years of marriage. Jack began working for Canada Trust in 1970 and spent many years traveling for work. He always looked forward to his weekends and days off, many of which were spent in Shallow Lake at the Radbourne family farm. Here, Ted, Annie and the Radbourne and Playford clans made sure he was always welcome. Jack never left hungry or without good stories to share. In 1979, Jack decided to make a move with Canada Trust that would take him to Langley, B.C. This was a big move but an easy decision as it would allow him to be home with his family. This new position eventually brought Jack and his family to Calgary in 1989 where he worked as a Sr. Pension Trust Officer until his retirement in 1999. He maintained many great work friendships forged through these years.

After retirement in 1999, Jack and Diane were able to begin their planned and much anticipated travels. They both really enjoyed a trip down the Eastern Seaboard, a 45-day caravan down the Baja and many more adventures with their trailer down south to the warmer climate. These trips cultivated many new but strong relationships that continue to this day. Though they loved their travel Jack and Diane always made family a priority and continued to come home for the births of each of their beloved grandchildren. Kathleen (2001), Greg (2002), Tyson (2005) and Kyle (2009). Time at home was always welcome as Parkridge Rise and the neighbors continued many social gatherings and again forged friendships that would last throughout the years. This street was a close reminder of family times spent on the farm with many special events, Stampede BBQ’s, Christmas potlucks and birthdays really any excuse to get together and have a good time. In 2009, many years after their travels began and 5 grandchildren later, Jack and Diane decided to park the trailer at Pine Lake. At this more permanent location, they could enjoy the best of both worlds with great neighbors at home and the trailer while still close enough to home to watch their grandchildren grow.

Jack enjoyed the outdoors and spent many years volunteering in the Scouts Canada organization. He enjoyed camping, walks in the park and supporting /attending various sporting and cultural events for his grandchildren.

This is a great loss for all who knew him, especially those closest. No one can capture a room or tell a story quite like Jack! Let's try to keep the stories going as I know he is still here with us all in our fond memories and cherished in our hearts forever.

Jack always wanted to write a book and become a published author. The following poem was a great source of pride for him.

A Cow towner’s Nightmare

The night grows dark, the fire burns low and a coyote’s call gives me chills,

We’re hunkered down in this old bull camp tucked way back in the hills,

The chili’s been ate and the coffee’s been drank and the horse’s night lined to graze,

Now it’s into our tipis, we need some sleep, we’ve been gathering strays for six days,

I’m jolted awake by a bump and a scream! a bear? a Stampede? was the nightrider gored?

Naw - it seems I’ve been dozin and dreamin
and rolled off the couch when my wife started screamin,

Cause Edmonton scored.

Jack Halls,
Calgary, Alberta,
January 1997
