Obituary for William Wylie "Wylie" Spicer

Wylie Spicer
July 25 1949 - May 21, 2018

Husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, renaissance man, dreamer, musician, legal mind, intellectual, critic...

The best dressed man in the neighbourhood, no matter his mood, no matter his task - seersucker, plaid, pattern, statement piece, or bow tie - carefully selected from a curated wardrobe reflecting his broad, worldly perspective. A musical tribute shirt, doc martin boots paying homage to his birthplace, private school boy touches that gave away his cultured roots. A beloved character by any description.

Wylie was not a man's man so much as an everyone's man. He spoke softly, smiled readily, pontificated deeply and commented with certainty, on most subjects. His wife, children and grandchildren were sacred. Baseball too was important. On any other topic he was open to hearing other points of view. Despite his accomplishments, he was a man without pretense.
This beloved family man, renowned lawyer, professor, board member, community member, had time for everyone. He was quickly recruited to join local boards, Two Wheel View, an organization dedicated to getting kids into cycling, as well as the local Community Association board - where the vision was established for a significant capital project that is now taking shape.

It wasn't Calgary he loved so much as the street that he unwittingly ended up on, in a neighbourhood he understood. He liked that neighbours knew each others names, played music together, shared drinks on porches, walked each others dogs and often shared meals. "I can't imagine what would have become of us had we not ended up on this very street."

He walked his dog Max religiously and regally. He nodded hellos to passersby and welcomed others to join in if they shared his schedule. He exuded love through the twinkle in his eyes, his laugh lines and his warmth. He loved. He loved his wife. His kids. His dog. His street. His neighbourhood. His music. His quality of life. He lived, he loved, he shared, he belonged. Suave and debonair he woo'd while playing guitar, singing, or more frequently, while citing compelling baseball statistics. In his illness he retained his dignity, sophistication and elegance - he worried about his readiness to welcome guests into his hospital room and thought twice about who he might lean on in times of need.

Wylie Spicer lived a life worthy of celebration, a life to be remembered, a life likely to inspire story telling for generations to come.

Wylie is survived by his wife Monique Auffrey and step-daughter Sophie of Calgary; sons, Josh (Ewa) of Toronto and Warren (Ennaea) of Montreal; sister Sally (Thierry) of Halifax; and grandchildren, Sacha, Aaron, Sterling, Jones. He is also survived by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of long time friends.
