Maloney, John (Jack) Charles
August 25, 1938 - Thursday, June 7, 2018

Jack Maloney passed away on June 7, 2018 after more than 2 years battling cancer with his legendary determination and spirit for life.

Jack is survived by his devoted wife of almost 58 years Wilma; daughters Colleen (Robi) and Sharon (Craig) and son Kevin (Teresa); as well as grandchildren Michael (Caroline), Scott (Annie), Stephanie (Joe), Chelsea, Olivia and Jackson, and great-grandchildren Jeffrey and Ida; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Nancy and Don Robson and their family.

Jack was born and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba and began his career with Canadian Pacific Railway in Data Processing, when a computer took up an entire office floor. In November 1959, he was transferred to Montreal and in January 1962 he joined Air Canada. During their 25 year stay in Montreal, Jack and Wilma bought a family cottage in Georgeville, Quebec where the family enjoyed many happy, fun-filled years. At Air Canada, he enjoyed a 32 year career which brought him to Calgary in 1983 where he and Wilma made many new friends. After his retirement from Air Canada, he went on to enjoy more than 10 years with the Calgary Flames, combining his passions for business and sport.

Jack was a people person, who felt that his family was his greatest accomplishment. He touched many lives through his volunteer work in Calgary with; Salvation Army, as Santa for the Calgary Flames, over 30 years with the Calgary Stampede Reception Committee, and of course, for the various athletic associations his children were involved in. He also volunteered with various business associations including SKAL, The Rotary Club, Silver Springs, the Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic and in their retirement years at the Lake Havasu Balloon Festival and more.

Jack helped shape many organizations through his presidencies and memberships on several boards. His collection of recognition gifts will be treasured by his family.

Jack was ‘larger than life’ and loved nothing more than bidding Flames fans goodnight, even after the worst defeat. He was fortunate enough to have been on the flight back from Montreal after the Flames 1989 Stanley Cup win, and to drink champagne from the coveted cup. He and Wilma loved entertaining and were known for their St Patrick’s Day parties. As a true Irishman, Jack cooked corned beef and cabbage for all who attended and was often in attendance at the Robbie Burn’s night.

Having lived in several cities, Jack’s friendships span the country and the US. Their many Calgary friends supported he and Wilma throughout this journey, and the parade of visitors through Dulcina Hospice was greatly appreciated by Jack and the family.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Dr. John & Paige Fernandes, Dr. Dean Reuther and the exceptional doctors and nurses who cared for Jack with compassion, good humour and love at FMC and the Dulcina Hospice.

In lieu of flowers; please contribute to the Calgary Flames Foundation, a charity that was close to Jack’s heart and benefited from much of his volunteer work on the Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. A Celebration of Life will be held June 25, 2018 at Silver Springs Golf & Country Club (1600 Varsity Estates Drive N.W., Calgary, Alberta T3B 2W9), from 1-4 pm.
