Obituary for Mona Lena Smith

Mona Smith
June 27, 1936 - Sunday, May 13, 2018

Mona Lena Smith passed away unexpectedly this past Mother’s Day at the Rockyview hospital due to complications related to illness.

Not long after Mona was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan, her father Frederik Jepsen passed away when she was just a toddler. He always held a special place in her heart. Mona’s family moved to Saskatoon shortly thereafter, where she grew up with her mother Mildred Saunders and sister Joan Van Impe. Years later, her mother remarried and Mona’s family grew to include her siblings Janice Ryan, Jack (Jeannine) Saunders, and Rodney (Anna) Saunders.

Mona had four sons: Dean, Dwayne (Elaine), Arnie and Todd (Karen). She was also close to her nieces and nephews Allyson (Mike Hansen) and Daryl (Tiffany Madden) of Canmore, and Joelle (Jim Laing) and Gregory Ryan of Victoria.

Mona moved to Calgary and worked as a legal assistant until her retirement. She enjoyed moving every few years, dining out in great restaurants, Nikos being one of her favourites. Mona enjoyed good food and dining was an event to be savoured. Mona was always well dressed and had regular visits to Phamtastic nails for manicures and pedicures.

Although she enjoyed her years living in Victoria with her sister Jan, Mona returned to Calgary in 2016. She was looking forward to attending her granddaughter Kelsey (Jonathan) Schmautz’ wedding this summer. While she will not be there in person, we know she will be in spirit.

Mona will be dearly missed by many friends and family, including her grandchildren Derek (Dayna), Kelsey (Jonathan), and Taylor Schmautz of Calgary; and Brennan Tyerman, Ryan, Kurtis and Brett Schmautz of Saskatoon. She is now reunited with her mother, father and son Arnie.

A private Memorial will be held in remembrance of Mona on Saturday, June 9, 2018.
