Obituary for Merlin Herbert Rhodes

Merlin Herbert (Dusty) Rhodes
February 7, 1937 – February 20, 2018

Merlin passed away peacefully in the Vulcan Hospital on Tuesday February 20, 2018 at the age of 81. At Merlin’s request, no services will be held.

He is survived by his daughter Viola Routly (Jeff), and three grandchildren; Nathan, Rebecca, and Emily; brother Ron (Tina), brother Gordon, sister-in-law Sheila, and their families. He is predeceased by his wife Kathy, daughter Linda and his parents Viola and Clarence as well as many beloved family members.

His family called him Merlin, however, he wasn’t thrilled with his name and most often introduced himself as Dusty. He was born in Champion and raised there as well as in Hillcrest. He was happy to come back to Champion to retire.

Merlin married Kathy in 1960 and had two children. In 1992, the first of three grandchildren arrived, and he never stopped being their Papa. During their busy young years, he stepped in as chauffer, personal shopper, general repairman, and teacher. Any time that he could spend with his grandchildren was his favorite time. He taught them to golf, play ball, fish, hunt, drive……

He held various positions over the years as a general manager in the oil patch and Valley Ridge Golf Club. He retired after leaving Nanton. He enjoyed working at Valley Ridge and then running the restaurant at Nanton. He played at Valley Ridge, Nanton, and for the last 25 years or so, at the Vulcan Golf and Country Club. His younger years were spent playing baseball as well as many other sports too numerous to name. He enjoyed teaching youth and spent years coaching kids in baseball and golf.

The family would like to thank the Vulcan Medical Centre staff and physicians, Choice Memorial, as well as the many others that helped him through this time.
