Obituary for Katherine Rhodes

Katherine Rhodes
Katherine Teresa Rhodes
March 28, 1939 – January 22, 2018

Kathy passed away peacefully at Dulcina Hospice in Calgary, on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the age of 78. At Kathy’s request, no Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy's name are gratefully accepted by the Vulcan Medical Centre (http://www.vchwfoundation.com/ways-to-give/donate-now-online.html).

Kathy is survived by her husband of 58 years, M.H. (Dusty) Rhodes; her daughter Viola Routly (Jeff); grandchildren Nathan, Rebecca, and Emily; sisters Agnes Cook, Mary Hurok, Liz Bryce, Flo Van Oene (Bill), Terri Finley, and brother Leo Gottfried (Jan); brothers-in-law Ron (Tina) and Gordon; sister-in-law Sheila, and their families.

Kathy was predeceased by her daughter Linda, her parents, eleven brothers and sisters, and her mother and father-in-law Clarence and Viola Rhodes. Kathy grew up near Gimli, Manitoba in a large family of which she was the second youngest. She spoke recently about loving the outdoors as she had so many older sisters, she was not needed in the house and spent her time helping outside. This never changed and she also chose the outdoors when she could. She also mentioned that she worked several kinds of jobs as a teenager and enjoyed working in the hospital kitchen and laundry.

Kathy married in 1960 and had two children. She spent the rest of her life caring for her family and friends. In 1992, the first of three grandchildren arrived, and she never stopped being their Nana. During their busy young years, she stepped in as nanny, cook, housekeeper, gardener, chauffer, and nurse. She always expressed her gratitude that she was able to be close to her grandchildren.

She held various positions over the years involved with cooking, as she had the knack for preparing good food. Kathy also had several hobbies but golf became her passion. She won many tournaments and championships; however, a tournament was just another way to get in another round. She was also able to golf with all three grandchildren, which gave her tremendous pleasure. She played at Valley Ridge, Nanton, and for the last 25 years or so, at the Vulcan Golf and Country Club. We are sure that she played the first and last round of the course each year. Ladies League Tuesdays were special to her and she developed many strong friendships at the golf course.

The family would like to thank Dr. Morris and Patti from the Tom Baker Cancer Center; Rhonda and Vicki from Palliative Home Care; Dulcina Hospice; Dr. Nelisiwe Mbambo and the Vulcan Medical Centre; Choice Memorial, as well as the many others that helped her through this time.
