Obituary for Randall Mark Roeric

Randall Mark Roeric
Randall Roeric
January 20, 1956 - Friday, January 12, 2018

We are saddened by the passing of our beloved Rand Roeric on January 12, 2018 at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, with his son Mark and Mark’s partner Ashley Dasent beside him.

Rand was a deeply loving, thoughtful, sensitive and poetic man. He was loved by many and shared an extraordinarily close bond with his children.

He will be profoundly missed by his daughter Leda Roeric; son, Mark Roeric; long-time partner, Cathy Ostlere; step-children Victoria Whyte, David Whyte and Tegan Whyte; former wife Catherine Reid; and brother Ross Roeric.

Rand was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Ruth Roeric of Kitchener, Ont.

His warmth and laughter will be fondly remembered by his nieces Malia Neighbours and Cheryl Roeric and sister-in-law, Donna Roeric; his Ontario family of Jim Reid, Susan Turner, nieces Mary Reid and Claire Turner Reid; and friends, Tim Whyte, Robert and Evonne Smulders, Eric and Sabrina Dennis and Joseph Zamuda.

Rand will be especially missed by his staff at Maranda Reprographics. For Rand and his employees, Maranda was a close-knit family as well as a place to work for over 30 years. His kind and generous management style earned him much respect and admiration in the printing industry.

Rand was born in Kitchener, Ontario, January 20, 1956. He graduated from Ajax High School in 1974 and from Western University in 1977 with an honours degree in English literature. In 1976, Rand drove his TR6 west to Calgary, followed closely by Catherine in 1978. After the births of Leda and Mark he co-founded Maranda Reprographics & Printing in 1985 with his dear friend, Maria Austin.

Rand loved photography, fast cars, cameras, poetry, hiking, cross-country skiing and music. He enjoyed enthusiastic conversations about cameras, lenses and f-stops with Mark and David. A natural athlete, he hiked in the wilderness on both sides of the 49th parallel in North America with family and friends. His photo-trekking trips with Jim and Robert involved lots of camera gear that resulted in beautiful shots that he shared in Maranda’s annual calendar.

Rand avidly traveled and hiked with Cathy in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Rand also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with Mark, Leda, Tegan and Cathy. His annual favourite hike, Larch Valley, was often in the company of his children and step-children.

For all who knew him, driving a Porsche was one of Rand’s pleasures. He owned many cars over 30 years including his favourite, a 1985 Targa nicknamed Francesca. One of our enduring memories is Rand arriving in his latest Porsche, baseball cap pulled low, convertible top down, and all smiles and open heart.

Rand owned a marvellous collection of Taylor and Martin guitars. He played and sang every day of his adult life and was always teaching himself new songs that delighted his family, the neighbours and the cats, Sam and Peaches. Singing and playing with Mark and Leda gave him so much pleasure.

Rand was the love and light of Cathy’s life and she was his. They found each other through their love for the written word. Poetry was one of their shared languages.

In the words of one of Rand’s favourite poets,
Leonard Cohen: “There’s a crack in everything,
that's how the light gets in.”

Thank you sweet man for bringing the light.
We’re sorry you had to go.

A Celebration of Rand’s Life will take place in Calgary on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 5-10 p.m. at the home of Tim Whyte – 3226 6 St. S.W. Please bring stories of Rand to share at 6 pm.
