Obituary for Barbara Ann Ross

Barbara Ann Ross
Ross, Barbara Ann,
May 7th, 1939 Brooklyn, New York
January 10th, 2018 Calgary, Alberta

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Ross on Wednesday January 10, 2018 at the age of 78 years. Barbara was daughter to Angela and Albert George Sr., and grew up in Brooklyn NY. She is survived by her Brother Albert George Jr., her children, Robert (and family), Suzanne, David, Ely, daughter in-law Megan and grandchild Isla Belle.

Barbara was a certified Iyengar instructor with more than 30 years experience. She studied at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India with B.K.S Iyengar and extensively with many other senior Iyengar teachers. She also lived and worked for many years at the Yasodhara Ashram in Kootenay Bay, B.C.

Barbara was a practicing Vipassana Yogi for 25 years. She received her teacher training under the guidance of Bhante Gunaratana, the abbot of Bhavana Monastery in West Virginia. Barbara's Buddhist name was 'Buddha Pali', which means protector or guardian of the Buddha, which Barbara definitely was!

In the early 90's Barbara's entrepreneurial spirit and pursuit of wellness led her to open Calgary's first Certified Organic produce market, “Organic Harvest”, located at The Blackfoot Farmer's Market. She pioneered relationships with the top organic farmers in BC which has paved the way for local organic produce to arrive on the Calgary food scene.

A decade later, her commitment to practice meditation led her to create and establish the Yoga and Meditation Community Center in Calgary where she was director and senior teacher for many years. In 2011, Barbara sold the center to pursue her retirement, spending winters on the beaches of Hawaii and Florida.
She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Isla, taking long walks in the mountains, sitting in her garden watching the birds, knitting blankets and practicing the ukulele. She was an excellent cook and made many memories around family meals. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Barbara's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday January 27, 2018
at the Marda Loop Community Center at 3:30pm, 3130 16 St SW, Calgary, AB.
