Obituary for Norma Joyce Lawton (English)

It is with much sadness and love that we announce that Norma Lawton passed away on December 12, 2017 at the age of 82.

Norma is lovingly remembered by her children Tom Lawton (Sikanara), Debbie Russell (Don) and Heather Mitchell (Clive) and grandchildren Amie-Lynn, Kanika and Khemerak. Norma is now reunited with her loving husband, William (Bill) who passed away in 1992 and her parents, Henry and Maude English.

Norma was born on March 22nd, 1935, in Coronation, Alberta and grew up in Seba Beach where her father, Henry ran the service station/garage until his death. She moved to Edmonton with her mother where she attended Victoria Composite High School and started her career in banking. She was thrilled to have the opportunity to work for the Bank of Nova Scotia in the Banff Springs Hotel one summer.

She met Bill on a blind date in 1959, they were married that same year and they shared 33 years of happy marriage. Norma loved to travel and the family experienced many fabulous vacations and camping trips together. One of the highlights of her life was the opportunity for her and Bill to dance in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

She continued to travel after Bill’s passing with her children and close friends all over the world, participating in many adventures like riding a camel, sand surfing, hot air ballooning, body surfing, kayaking, hiking… A favourite memory is of her laughing and dancing at the piano bar in the Banff Springs Hotel with Amie-Lynn, Heather and Debbie on her 75th birthday.

Norma also enjoyed many other hobbies over her life including, gardening, sewing, bridge, golfing, cross country skiing, bowling, ping pong, bingo, puzzles, crafts, swimming, square dancing, Red Hatters group, Stage West and Theatre Calgary.

Alzheimer’s robbed her of the ability to do many of the activities she loved, but she always remained a loving spirit with a cheerful smile. Norma will be remembered as a gentle soul and for her love of family and friends. Although our hearts are broken, we will carry Mom’s spirit of kindness, generosity, fairness, and love with us forever.

Many thanks to the staff at Lake Bonavista Village, Urban Palliative Home Care, Nurse Next Door, Paramed and Southwood Hospice for making her final weeks as comfortable as possible. Special shout out to Wanda for her extraordinary, compassionate care.

If friends and family so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.

A gathering for friends and family will be held at the Mitchell's house (472 Lake Topaz Cres SE) on Saturday, December 16th at 6:00 pm.
