Obituary for LuVern (Wayne) Torgerson

LuVern (Wayne) Torgerson
Wayne "LuVern" Torgerson
July 26, 1940 - November 23, 2017

Wayne “LuVern” Torgerson was born on July 26, 1940 in Wadena Saskatchewan and passed away on November 23, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta.

LuVern grew up farming around Hendon, Saskatchewan and always considered his roots to be planted in this area. It was during this time that LuVern acquired his love of country music. Having taught himself to play the guitar he could often be heard singing and playing his favorite Hank Williams songs. In 1961 LuVern married Ilo Pugh, a farm girl from a few miles outside Rose Valley, Saskatchewan and they soon started their family, with sons Kelly and Kevin arriving in 1962 and 1963 respectively. In the early years LuVern supported his family by working as a floor installer and in search of work moved the family between Saskatoon, Regina and Kindersley. In 1969 the family made the big move to Victoria, BC where LuVern initially worked again as a floor installer before landing a job at the newly opened Juan de Fuca Recreation Center. LuVern, who became known as “Torgy” to his friends and co-workers, worked at the rec center for approximately 18 years. During that time, LuVern became the “ice maker” for the skating and curling rinks as well as the “pool man”, looking after maintenance of the swimming pool. In 1989 LuVern and Ilo moved to Calgary where LuVern initially worked as a Real Estate Agent before eventually getting back into the floor covering field. LuVern and Ilo were divorced in 1994. Shortly after retiring in 2004 LuVern suffered a stroke that left him wheel-chair bound until he passed on November 23, 2017 while in the Peter Lougheed Hospital.

The family would like to extend a thank you to all the caregivers at Clifton Manor as well as the medical staff at the Rockyview and Peter Lougheed hospitals.

LuVern will be remembered as hard working, a pleasure to be around, and a devoted father who loved to sing country and western music. He loved sports, rodeo, fishing and was a life-long Saskatchewan Roughrider fan. He will be fondly remembered by his sons Kelly (Kim McPherson), Kevin (Joanne Mukaida), sister Debbie Dease (Marvin), brother Ed Torgerson , numerous nieces and nephews along with many relatives and friends.
A small, private service will be held for immediate family only. If friends and family so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca) or a charity of your choice.
