Obituary for William James Handrahan

William Handrahan
August 19, 1958 - Monday, August 21, 2017

William (Billy) James Handrahan was born August 19, 1958 in Tignish, Prince Edward Island and passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary on August 21, 2017. Billy is survived by his loving partner and best friend, Judy Davis, and by extension, her children and grandchildren who thought Billy was the best ‘grandpa’ ever. Billy was predeceased by his parents Ida Mary and James William Handrahan and by his brother Dennis. He is lovingly remembered by sister Linda (Roger) Richard of Tignish, PEI; brother Roy (Karen) of Pleasant View, PEI; and brother Robert (Julie) of Bedford, Nova Scotia. He will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, in-laws and many cousins.

Billy was a lobster fisherman at heart but came out west to work on the rigs in Swan Hills. He then went to work for Bell Pole and settled in Calgary with his true calling as a property manager and maintenance man. He met many wonderful people who to this day remain his friends.

Billy and Judy shared many adventures together with travel to Las Vegas, Mexico, and also taking their best friend, Buddy, the labradoodle, out fishing and gopher hunting to Kananaskis country and ‘the pond’. Billy’s easy-going personality and loyalty created instant and lasting friendships with many folks, including many from both his hometown, Tignish, and the Calgary area. His love for animals included his long-time sidekick Bullet, the cat, and his backyard hockey teammate, Buddy. Billy enjoyed hosting daughter-in-law Heather and her two boys Adrian and Gabriel and introducing his grandchildren to the joys of bacon and eggs on weekend mornings. Son-in-law, Daniel, and his son, Daemyen, were also extremely fond of Billy and enjoyed visiting from Edmonton. Billy shared his Maritime roots with his friends and family and taught us ‘westerners’ the finer points of lobster cooking, cracking and eating PEI style!

Anyone who ever met Billy will remember his booming laugh and his heartfelt expression ‘gaday’ straight from Tignish. Billy was a big man, with an even bigger heart. His kindness and friendship will be sadly missed by many across Canada.

A Memorial Service will be held for Billy at the Kensington Legion, 1918 Kensington Rd., NW Calgary on Saturday August 26th from 2 to 4 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Simon & St. Jude Church in Tignish, PEI on September 6th at 3 pm. Cremains to be buried in the church cemetery with his parents and brother, Dennis.
