Obituary for Janet Elizabeth Papworth

Janet Elizabeth Papworth

August 28th, 1923 – August 3rd, 2017

Auntie Jan, as affectionately known by all her nieces and nephews, their children, and any child who knew her, had a great passion for travel and golf. She passed away peacefully on August 3rd in Calgary, Alberta, just shy of her 94th birthday. Auntie Jan loved and doted on her many nieces and nephews. Sleepovers at Lansdowne Avenue, homemade cinnamon buns, and excursions in her Austin Cambridge car made time with Auntie Jan fun and memorable. She also travelled with her nieces and nephews on special trips to New York, England and the U.S. Her loving spirit, kindness and caring will certainly live on.

Janet Elizabeth Papworth grew up on a farm near Turin, Alberta. As the oldest daughter of 4 siblings, she had the responsibility for helping in the kitchen with food preparation and baking. Although not her favorite responsibility, her skill at cooking and baking was enjoyed by many family members who were lucky enough to sit at her dining room table over the years. Jan’s lemon tarts will go down in history as absolutely the best!

Janet’s mother, a teacher, insisted that all the Papworth children have a high school education, and this resulted in a move to Calgary from the farm to realize this goal. After graduating from Western Canada High School, Janet worked a few jobs until she was hired by Air Canada. It was here that she found her niche and made a career eventually in a management position. She worked in the Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary Air Canada offices and made lifelong friends in all these places. Air Canada allowed her to enjoy travel all over the world including Africa, India and Bermuda to name a few, and to grace the many golf courses they offered.

Auntie Jan had a passion for golf and was a member at the Calgary Golf and Country Club for many years. She volunteered with the Samaritan Club of Calgary. She was a long-time member of the Anglican Parish of Christ Church in Calgary.

She will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and her great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Constance Hill and brothers Richard (Dick) Papworth and Donald Papworth. Her passing is the end of an era of pioneer raised children who truly loved the beauty and spirit of Alberta and created very strong community bonds.

A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 8 St SW, Calgary) on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 2:00 pm. If desired, donations can be made in Janet’s name to the Samaritan Club of Calgary or Christ Church Elbow Park Calgary.
