Obituary for Janet Anne Darrah

Janet Anne Darrah
Janet Darrah
June 20th, 1951 - Saturday, July 29th, 2017

Janet Anne Darrah, our wonderful mother and friend, passed away on July 29th, 2017. She was born in Calgary, Alberta on June 20th, 1951 to Robert and Mary Darrah. With Daniel Murphy, she raised three children: Dara, Maris, and Isaac Murphy.

Jan was a caring person with a sharp intellect and wit. She loved to chat with friends over a coffee or a glass of wine, and she had the ability to make everyone feel at ease. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 1972 and she became a speech pathologist, working in Calgary and the surrounding Foothills for many years. Growing up in a musical family, Jan loved singing and playing the piano. She was the pianist for many community groups, and she taught piano to a great number of students. If something reminded her of a tune, she would burst into song, often changing the words to suit the situation. Jan had fond memories of her travels, such as mopeding through Europe and traveling throughout Canada and the States. She enjoyed hiking, skiing, and spending time at the lake in Windermere, BC. Jan inspired people with her fighting spirit, her commitment to friendship, and her positive outlook on life.

A memorial celebration will be held at the High River United Church (145 Macleod Trail SW, High River) on Saturday, August 5th, at 2:00 pm. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Museum of the Highwood (High River), or William Watson Lodge (Kananaskis).
