Obituary for Merja Annikki Rikkinen (Sarkijarvi)

The family of Merja Annikki Rikkinen (Sarkijarvi), are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother. She died on Monday May 15, 2017, at Chinook Hospice in Calgary, AB. After a courageous fight with Colon cancer in 2015, Merja’s battle resumed in September of 2016 when it was discovered that the cancer had in fact spread. Unfortunately, after 6 months of different chemotherapy treatments, and a positive determined attitude, it became apparent the disease had progressed to a point where treatment was no longer effective.

Merja was born on June 18, 1959 in Port Arthur, Ontario to Elma and Jorma Sarkijarvi. The middle child of three beautiful daughters, Merja made an impact on all who knew her with her outgoing personality and caring, loving heart. Survived by her husband of over 40 years, Eric, along with their 2 children, Matti (Valentina) and Elsa (Colin) as well as 4 beautiful granddaughters, Taylor (20), Carlee (16), Celeste (11) and Angelica (4). Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she devoted her time to help raise them and shape them into the amazing young ladies they are. She preferred to be called “Gramma” by all, as that was her proudest accomplishment. She will also be sadly missed by her loving parents and sisters, Eija (Brian) and Sonja (Bill), as well as nieces, nephews and “other” children who have become family over the years. Merja devoted her life to her family and everyone knew how proud she was of each and every one of them.

A private cremation has already been carried out as per Merja’s final wishes and the family will be holding a Celebration of Life Event sometime in the future for all to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that those who wish may make donations to “One Walk to Conquer Cancer” as Elsa and friends will be walking in her memory. The team name is “Miles for Merja”; www.onewalk.ca.

Death is a brief separation
A temporary pain
Grieve not my dear
The sun will shine again
Death separates our bodies
But our hearts remain the same
And the memories of our love
Will soothe away your pain
And carry you over
Until we meet again
