Obituary for Matthew "Matt" Cameron Yip (Yip)

Matthew "Matt" Cameron Yip (Yip)
It is with broken hearts we announce that Matthew “Matt” Yip, loving son to Chuck and Cindy, caring brother to Ashley and dedicated fiancée to Kaylin Westbrook, passed away on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017 at the age of 23.

Matt was born in New Westminster, British Columbia on November 16th, 1993 and grew up in Coquitlam before moving to Kelowna in 2003. He then moved to Calgary in 2015. From a young age, he exhibited a natural athletic ability and competed in many sports including hockey, baseball, basketball, cross-country running, and golf. He was admired by both his teammates and his coaches for his outstanding work ethic and sportsmanship.

Beyond the world of sports, Matt always worked hard and strived for excellence in everything he did. Whether it was his education, from grade school to university where he completed his degree in Civil Engineering at UBC, or at his job as a concrete placer/finisher. His work ethic was always appreciated and commended by peers and co-workers alike.

Matt had an insatiable sense of adventure and in his short number of years, travelled around the world to Australia, Indonesia, Mexico and throughout North America. He scuba dove the Great Barrier Reef, drove a dog sled in Alaska and jumped out of an airplane in Cairns.

Matt was a genuine, kind-hearted soul who charmed all of those that met him. His ability to effortlessly make others laugh and smile was something that came naturally to him, and allowed him to instantly connect with people from all walks of life. His drive, dedication, ambition, and enthusiasm inspired those around him to live their own lives in a way that reflected those qualities, and he was looked up to by many as a guiding example. And even though he possessed such extraordinary qualities, Matt always remained a humble man and considered himself to be no greater than his peers.

While Matt made many people feel liked, he made only a chosen few feel deeply loved. Matt truly lived for the friends and family that he loved, always putting their happiness before this own. He made his fiancée Kaylin feel like the luckiest woman in the world to be blessed with such a true and genuine love, with every precious moment of their time together to be cherished. His parents were so proud to have raised such a caring, respectful, intelligent, hard-working and loving son.

From a shy and quiet little boy, Matt grew into an extraordinary man. Matt will be greatly missed by all those that knew him and loved him. He was the kind of person that anyone would be beyond proud to call a son, a brother, a partner, a friend, a teammate, or a co-worker. His memorial service will be held on January 21, 2017 at 14:00 at the Gallagher’s Canyon Golf Club located at 4320 Gallaghers Dr W, Kelowna BC.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be graciously appreciated at the UBC Donation Page in Memory of Matt Yip to help fund the continuing research of Mental Health.
