Obituary for Olga Foley (Solohub)

Olga Foley (Solohub)
Olga Foley (nee Solohub)
February 15, 1925 - August 23, 2016

Olga Foley (nee Solohub) passed away August 23, 2016 at the Rockyview Hospital at the age of 91. She is survived by her three children Peter, his wife Maria, Kathleen and her husband Terry, her son Tom and her granddaughter Natasha. She was predeceased by her former husband Tim Foley.

Olga was born in Montreal, Quebec and grew up there with her mother Maria Solohub whose husband passed away before any of Olga's children were born. She married Tim Foley and had three children in Montreal. Olga and Tim bought a new home in Dorval, Quebec and we all lived there until the late 60's. All the neighbors were friends and many a lively bridge party would be going on most weekends.

In 1968, the car was packed up and the family drove across the country and set up a new home in Calgary. What a different place Calgary was compared to Montreal back then. So many new people to meet, friends to make and weather to get used to. Olga and Tim were so disappointed not to find English muffins, proper crumpets or Montreal smoked meat anywhere in Calgary. We soon enough settled in and made many friends. Olga was always a plant lover and had numerous house plants indoors on every available surface. Sometimes there was barely enough room to put our dinner plates on the table which by the way she cooked for us every single night. We always loved the Ukrainian dishes she made and especially looked forward to her borscht every week. Olga loved to watch birds and spent many afternoons sitting out front on the porch doing just that and chatting with all the neighbors who stopped by to say hello. The family can't thank all of you enough that took a moment to stop and say hi to her. You have no idea how much she loved that. In the past decade she discovered cruising and enjoyed it immensely. Another thing she came to love in recent years was chocolate. She would love just a piece or two every day and the look of joy and contentment on her face while she ate it, said it all!

Our family would like to thank all the caregivers, friends and neighbors who took the time to give her a kind word, help her out, cut her hair, bake her a cake or a pie, or visit her in the hospital. All those things meant so much to her and to us. We would also like to acknowledge Teresa at Choice Memorial, Brad and Randi at First Call Monuments and Carrie at Hanni's Restaurant for all their help and support.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223-34th Street SW) on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 11:00 am with The Rev. Mario Basque, Presider. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. To view and share photos, stories and condolences of Olga please visit www.choicememorial.com. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services (403) 277-7343.
