Obituary for Peter Yaworski

Peter Yaworski
On October 15, 2015, at the age of 83, our beloved father and grandfather Peter Yaworski passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.

Peter was predeceased by his wife Beverley (née Scarfe) and survived by his three children Jim, Bob (Myrna) and Lesley; grandchildren Kristin, Lynele (James), Chelsea, Beverley, Robyn and Hunter; great-grandchildren Laina and Rielle; and sister-in-law Joan Shaw.

Peter was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 31st, 1931, as the only child of Michael and Katherine (née Mochnaski) Yaworski. A defining characteristic of Peter was his tireless pursuit of knowledge and innovation as an avid lifelong learner. Although he was a draftsman by trade, Peter pursued graduate studies at the University of Manitoba, earning a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy well into his sixties. In his eighties, Peter was adept with technology and using a smartphone, an invention that revolutionized his life by allowing him to stay in touch with family and friends. He was endlessly curious about life-enhancing innovative technologies and learning new ways to communicate the words that flowed from his quick-witted and comical mind. After talking to him for even a short time, such as over coffee with his friends at McDonald’s, it was clear that Peter never ran out of interesting and important things to say.

Even though he had an immense interest in technology and innovation, Peter equally pursued the artistic and recreational side of life. He was a fantastic cook, poet, and philosopher who loved the majesty and beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Following retirement, Peter especially cherished the long drives he would take with his wife Beverley to the Calgary airport, where they loved to watch aircraft take off and land. Peter considered any time with his wife and family time well spent, as he would go out of his way to visit family whenever he had the chance. He also loved to visit with and talk about his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughters, who all made him very proud.
Near the end of his life, Peter recorded some of his many poems that he had written over the years. The following poem, written by Peter, is entitled “The Night Slips In”:

“The Sun is low, the night slips in,
another world starts stirring again.
So with life as its course is run,
one must end before another’s begun.
You first have sailed that tranquil sea
and I know you will think of me.
When out of the dusk silently sails a ship,
you will be there to ease my trip.
Then on that day when we’re together once more,
we’ll set sail for a distant shore
where the flowers bloom, never to close –
Then, once again, you’ll be my sweet red rose.”

A private memorial service will be held shortly for family and friends of Peter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca.
Photos, stories and condolences may be shared with Peter's family through www.choicememorial.com. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services (403) 277-7343.
