Obituary for Phyllis Corinne Smith (Gardiner)

Phyllis Corinne Smith (Gardiner)
Our dear Mom passed away suddenly and peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the age of 83. She leaves behind her three daughters, Debbie Smith (Barry), and The Twins, Wendy Duff (Joel), Shelley Ramsay and her husband Ray, all of Calgary. She was a loving Nana to her four granddaughters, Lindsay Gibson of Bailey, Colorado, Carly Duff, Brittney Ramsay (Nick), Breanne Ramsay (Andrew), all of Calgary. She had two great grandchildren, Hannah Grace and her brother Carter, also of Bailey Colorado, who called her “GG”.

Mom came from a modest, small and very close family, and as an only child, she was her Mother and Daddy’s pride and joy. Born to Marie and Phil Gardiner in Winnipeg, she went to Kelvin High school and remained friends with many of her classmates until the end of her life. While living in Winnipeg she attained the distinction of becoming Honoured Queen of Bethel One of the International Order of Job’s Daughters.

As a mostly stay-at-home Mom, she devoted her life to Debbie and The Twins. She traveled to seven different Canadian cities when the family was transferred, always supportive of the decision to pick up and move again. While living in London, Ontario she fondly remembered taking 11 people in her Volkswagen Beetle each week to go bowling, one of her favourite pastimes.

Mom and the family came to Calgary in 1971 where she enjoyed raising three teenage girls, playing badminton and bowling at the Winter Club, and for a while owned and operated Stadium Hairstyling. She maintained a lifelong friendship with her pal from Grade 1 in Winnipeg, Audrey Morton, and in her later years she developed some very special friendships (and we know you know who you are) and often talked about how much she enjoyed her Bingo buddies.
Always devoted to her family and never wanting to be a burden, she left this life peacefully, five months after her furry companion of 15 years “Buddy”.

Rest in peace Mom, Nana and GG, with Nana and Grampa, until we meet again. You will forever be in our hearts and we can never repay you for the love and devotion you gave to us throughout your life.

As per her wishes, Mom will be cremated and there will be a private family get together to celebrate her life. Her ashes will be returned to Winnipeg as she requested, to be close to her Mom and Dad.

Friends wishing to do so can make a donation to a charity of your choice. The Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, was a cause that was close to Mom’s heart. Photos, memories and stories may be shared with the family here on her Book of Memories.
